Nature in the middle of the city

The forest holds 52 % of the capital's urban green space and works as a rain sponge, a lung and a temperature regulator. It is home to 148 resident and migratory bird species, 472 insect species, 51 arachnids, 24 reptiles, 5 amphibians and 5 mammals. The Third Section has been a Protected Natural Area since 1992.

A bit of history

The First Section is the forest everyone knows: the hill, the Castle and the early-20th-century lakes. The Second opened in 1964 for recreation, sports and water infrastructure. The Third was added in 1974 as a reserve. The Fourth, on the grounds of the former Military Camp 1-F in Santa Fe, opened in phases from 2021 and was inaugurated on September 24, 2024 as part of the Chapultepec: Nature and Culture project, which also brought the cable car, the elevated walkways and the Cineteca.
